|
CC 18.1 Situation
Gulzār Bāno is engaged to Lādle Mian but she has to convince her father that she doesn’t want to marry him. This lesson
contains expressions to use in an argument: agreement, disagreement, wishes, regrets, rights, hopes, and fears.
CC 18.2 Hyderabad
The city of Hyderabad is the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Until Indian Independence, it was an
autonomous kingdom ruled by a dynasty of “Nizāms.” It was famous for its “nawābs” (courtiers) and courtly culture. The
old city, with a predominantly Muslim population, still contains some of the royal flavor. Urdu is still the main
language of old Hyderabad, while Telugu is the state language of Andhra Pradesh.
CC 18.3 Chār Mīnār
The most important monument of Hyderabad’s old section, the Chār Mīnār is four towers joined by a central structure.
Arched openings lead to the space underneath. Visitors can climb up into the central structure and get excellent views
of the bazaars and squares around it. It was built by King Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 when he moved his city from nearby
Golconda fort to the current site of Hyderabad.
CC 18.4 Lād Bāzār
To the west of Chār Mīnār is Lād Bāzār, where women flock to purchase bangles and other jewelry items.
CC 18.5 Burqa
In traditional South Asian Muslim culture a burqa is a garment worn by women to hide themselves from the public gaze.
Although the custom of burqa wearing is disappearing in most parts of South Asia, in Hyderabad even today many women
wear burqas in the markets. The burqa headpiece has a flap which can be raised to reveal the wearer’s face.
CC 18.6 Golconda
This hilltop fortress was the capital of the Qutub Shahi kings in the 16th Century, although it had been inhabited for
many centuries previously.
CC 18.7 Nikah
The Muslim wedding ceremony is called “nikah.” It is similar to the Christian wedding ceremony in that it’s main focus
is the exchange of vows and the signing of a contract between the bride and groom. An important feature of the nikah is
that it begins with the priest asking the bride if she gives her consent to initiate the ceremony. In theory she has the
right to refuse. Another important feature is that the couple must agree on the “mehr”, the amount of compensation to be
paid by the husband to the wife in the event of divorce, and this becomes part of the marriage contract. Many of the
other customs surrounding marriage are the same for Muslims as Hindus.
CC 18.8 Wedding Clothes
In both Muslim and Hindu marriages, the bride usually wears red. In Muslim culture she might wear a “gharārā”, a lower
pants-like garment with very wide “bell-bottoms,” worn under a kurta/qameez. The bride always wears a large veil. Of
course she is loaded down with lots of gold jewelry. The groom might wear a “shervānī”, a tight-fitting, knee-length
coat buttoning down the front.

18.1 Expressing opinions, disagreeing
Hindi has several ways of expressing thoughts, ideas, and opinions. Here are some of
them:
मैं सोचती हूँ कि … | I think that… |
मेरा ख़्याल है कि … |
My thought is that… |
मेरा विचार है कि … |
My thought is that… |
मेरे विचार में … |
In my opinion… |
मेरे विचार से … |
In my opinion… |
मेरे ख़्याल में … |
In my opinion… |
मेरे ख़्याल से … |
In my opinion… |
Examples:
मैं सोचता हूँ कि वह आज नहीं
आयेगी ।
मेरा विचार (ख़्याल) है कि
वह आज नहीं आयेगी ।
मेरे विचार (ख़्याल) में वह
आज नहीं आयेगी ।
I think she will not come today.
View movie about विचार and ख़्याल
बात (noun f.) literally
means “talk”, but note how it is used in various idiomatic expressions:
बात करना |
to talk (about a particular topic) |
बातें |
to chat (about various topics) |
मैं तुम से एक |
I want to talk to you (about something). |
वे बातें कर रहे |
They are chatting. |
क्या बात |
What’s the matter? |
कोई बात |
No problem. |
आपकी बात |
What you say is right. |
मेरी बात |
Listen to what I’m saying. |
उसकी बात ग़लत |
What he said was wrong. |
The expression बात मानना is useful when agreeing or
disagreeing with someone:
वह मेरी बात |
He won’t agree with me. |
क्या आप अपने |
Do you obey (agree with) your parents? |
Here are some expressions with the word मर्ज़ी (noun f.):
मैं अपनी मर्ज़ी |
I will marry according to my own pleasure. |
वह अपनी पत्नी |
He doesn’t do anything against his wife’s wishes. |
18.2 Hopes, fears, beliefs, feelings
Hindi has several ways of expressing hope:
मुझे आशा है |
I hope that… |
मेरी आशा है |
I hope that… |
मैं आशा करता |
I hope that… |
मुझे उम्मीद है |
I hope that… |
मेरी उम्मीद है |
I hope that… |
मैं उम्मीद करता |
I hope that… |
The rest of the sentence will most likely be in the subjunctive
(optative) or future tense.
Likewise, Hindi has several ways of expressing fear or worry:
मुझे डर है |
I am afraid that… |
मेरा |
My fear is that… |
मैं डरता हूँ |
I fear that… |
मैं पानी से |
I’m afraid of water. |
मुझे फ़िक्र है |
I’m worried that… |
मेरी फ़िक्र है |
My worry is that… |
मेरी चिन्ता है |
My worry is that… |
मैं फ़िक्र करता |
I worry that… |
The rest of the sentence will most likely be in the future tense.
The word कहीं
(literally “somewhere”) can also be used in a negated sentence with the sense of “I’m afraid…”
कहीं लोग हमें |
[I’m afraid] people will see us. |
कहीं अम्मी मेरा |
[I’m afraid] Mom may be waiting for me. |
कहीं ऐसा न हो |
[I’m afraid] that … |
Note that the verb in such sentences is normally in subjunctive,
and the negation particle is shortened to न .
Learn these expressions for belief:
मैं भरोसा करता |
I believe that… |
मुझे भरोसा है |
I believe that… |
मैं यक़ीन करता |
I believe that… |
मुझे यक़ीन है |
I believe that… |
मैं विश्वास |
I believe that… |
मुझे विश्वास है |
I believe that… |
To express “believing in X,” use “X पर” with
any of the above expressions.
मुझे तुम पर |
I believe in you. |
Note also the following expressions for feelings:
मुझे महसूस हो |
I am feeling that… |
मुझे महसूस होता |
I feel that… |
कौन मेरी दुख का |
Who can feel my pain? |
मेरे प्यार को |
Feel my love. |
18.3 Past subjunctive / past conditional
You know how to use the normal subjunctive (optative) to talk
about future events that are uncertain, desired, or conditional. Hindi also has a past subjunctive
tense which allows us to talk about past events that are conditional (“if I had gone…”), counterfactual (“I
would have gone”), hypothetical (“I would go”), or regretted (“if only I had gone”).
The past subjunctive is simply the imperfect form of the verb
with no auxiliary verb:
अगर वह वहाँ |
If she had gone there, she would have met me. |
मैं आपके साथ |
I would certainly have seen the film with you |
The word काश may be used
to introduce a past subjunctive sentence expressing regret or a wish that something were otherwise:
काश मेरे पास |
I wish I had a lot of money. |
काश ये मर्द लोग |
I wish these men-folk listened to what we |
काश तुम |
I wish you understood. |
Note: with a feminine plural subject (e.g. the third example
above), when there is no auxiliary verb to indicate the plural, the “dot” should be transferred to the main
verb.
18.4 More postpositions
Learn these new postpositions:
X से पहले |
before X |
X के बाद |
after X |
X के बिना |
without X |
X के बग़ैर |
without X |
X के अलावा |
besides X |
X के बजाए |
instead of X |
X के ख़िलाफ़ |
against X |
Most of these can be used with verbs as well as nouns and
pronouns:
सोने |
before sleeping |
जाने के बाद |
after going |
सोचने के बिना |
without thinking |
मिलने के बग़ैर |
without meeting |
फ़िल्म देखने के अलावा |
besides seeing a film |
बाहर |
instead of eating out |
Note also the following special use of बिना and
बग़ैर with verbs:
तुम्हें देखे बिना मैं नहीं रह |
I can’t live without seeing you. |
मुझसे मिले बग़ैर मत |
Don’t leave without meeting me. |
These constructions use the perfect form of the verb in its
oblique form.
18.5 Past participles as adjectives
The perfect form of a verb is also called the past
participle. Past participles can be used as adjectives. They are often accompanied by an optional
“helper” verb (हुआ, हुए, हुई, हुईं).
verb (infinitive) |
past particple with helper verb |
meaning |

seated |
खड़ना |
खड़ा (हुआ) |
standing |
पहनना |
पहना (हुआ) |

मेरी |
My sister is sitting outside. |

एक सौ |
one hundred |
१,००० |
एक हज़ार |
one thousand |
१,००,००० |
एक लाख |
one lakh = one hundred thousand |

II. Oral Exercises
|
Guidelines: Work in groups of two or three at the
most. Speak only in Hindi-Urdu at all times. Do not revert to English for any reason, and do not take time to
explain grammar to each other. Focus on the task assigned. If you don’t understand something, you can ask
“क्या?” or “फिर बोलिये।” for clarification. After you are done, switch
roles and repeat the activity.
A. Student 1 makes a controversial statement, and Student 2 (etc.) responds,
agreeing or disagreeing, using the vocabulary and expressions from 18.1.
Example:
१. “अगले मैच में ड्यूक
जीतेगा।“
२. “मैं आपकी बात नहीं मानती। मैं सोचती हूँ कि यू. ऐन. सी. जीतेगा।“ …
B. Student 1 expresses a fear/worry using the “कहीं .. न ..” construction with the verb in subjunctive
future. Student 2 asks, “अगर .. तो आप क्या करेंगे?” “अगर .. तो मैं
..” (18.2)
Example:
१. “कहीं कल बर्फ़ न पड़े।“
२. “अगर कल बर्फ़ पड़े तो आप क्या करेंगी?”
१. “अगर बर्फ़ पड़े तो मैं
क्लास नहीं आऊँगी।“
C. Student 1 makes a statement of regret using “काश”. Student 2 asks “क्यों?” and Student 1 answers with a “अगर .. तो ..” (18.3)
Example:
१. “काश मेरे पास बहुत पैसा होता।“
२. “अगर आपके पास बहुत पैसा होता, आप क्या ख़रीदते?”
१. “अगर मेरे पास बहुत पैसा होता, मैं आपके लिये नई गड़ी ख़रीदता।“
D. Student 1 selects a photo and shares it with student 2. It can be a
personal photo or a still from one of the Lesson movies. Student 2 describes the photo in detail. (18.5)
