10.1 Family Relations
Hindi has special words for each specific family relationship. For example there are five words for “uncle”
reflecting the five different kinds of uncle:
1. your mother’s brother
2. your mother’s sister’s husband
3. your father’s older brother
4. your father’s younger brother
5. your father’s sister’s husband
Here is a set of charts to help you learn the different relationship names. Refer to the Culture Notes for
additional information.
Parents:
We have two expressions for “parents” in Hindi:
माँ-बाप and माता-पिता
You can’t mix these expressions and say माँ-पिता or माता-बाप . Also, always put mom first!!
10.2 To have brothers and sisters
You already know that के पास means “have” as in मेरे पास एक सेब है । = I have an apple.
This construction can be used only if you possess an “inanimate” thing. If you “possess” a human being, then पास
disappears.
सलमान के एक भाई है ।
Salman has one brother.
मेरे एक बहिन है ।
I have a sister.
उसके तीन बहिनें हैं ।
He has three sisters. (Note the auxiliary verb agrees with “sisters,” not with “he.”)
There is another way to express the idea of possession:
राम का एक भाई है ।
Ram has one brother.
मेरी एक बहिन है।
I have a sister.
उसकी तीन बहिनें हैं।
He has three sisters. (Note the auxiliary verb agrees with “sisters,” not with “he.”)
Note that this construction uses the normal possessive, and the possessive inflects according to number and
gender of भाई, बहिन ।
Literally, you are saying, “Ram’s one brother is.” This is an idiomatic construction.
The constructions for brothers and sisters also applies to other relations, friends, etc.
Parallel constructions can be used to express possession of an object which is inanimate but large:
कराची में उसके दुकान है।
In Karachi he has a store.
कराची में उसकी दुकान है।
In Karachi he has a store.
Addressing Brothers and Sisters:
In Hindi, we generally specify whether the sibling is older or younger, i.e.:
बड़ा भाई = older brother
छोटी बहिन = younger sister
The postposition से is used to mean “than”:
मेरी बहिन मुझ से बड़ी हैं।
10.3 Plural for respect
When we wish to express respect for someone, we refer to him or her in the plural:
मेरी माता जी बहुत अच्छी हैं।
My mother is very good.
क्या आपके बड़े भाई आ रहे हैं?
Is your big brother coming?
मैं उनको पसंद करता हूँ।
I like him/her.
10.4 Animate Direct Objects
If a direct object is animate, it must be in the dative construction:
मैं स्टेशन से अपने भाई को ला रहा हूँ ।
I am bringing (picking up) my brother from the station.
Note: You cannot say : मैं स्टेशन से अपने भाई ला रहा हूँ ।
If an object is inanimate though, you have a choice:
मैं बाज़ार से संतरा ख़रीदूँगा।
I will buy an orange from the bazaar.
मैं बाज़ार से संतरे को ख़रीदूँगा।
I will buy an orange from the bazaar.
Most native speakers put को after all pronoun direct objects even if they are inanimate.
वह अपनी कार लाएगी ।
She will bring her car.
वह अपनी बहिन को लाएगी ।
She will bring her sister.
