Location Nainital
Date Filmed July, 2001
CC 17.1 Situation
Raju and Dinesh are visiting Nainital, a hill station in Uttranchal. Raju has a recurring dream about a mysterious
woman. This lesson contains expressions for speculating and assuming, vocabulary about the seasons, dreaming, and
touring.
CC 17.2 Nainital
The resort town of Nainital is situated on the hills around a beautiful “crater” lake. Many Hindi-Urdu films have been
set here.
CC 17.3 The Ghost Story Tradition
This is a typical Bollywood ghost story. We have included allusions to some of the classic Hindi-Urdu cinema ghost
movies: “Woh Kaun Thi?”, “Bees Sāl Bād”, “Mahal”, “Neel Kamal”, etc. in Raju’s dream sequence and the song sequence.
CC 17.4 Friendship
There are some significant cultural differences between America and South Asia with regard to the way two male friends
or two female friends behave together. In general, in South Asia, two same-gender friends will be much more
demonstrative of affection, and much more comfortable in each other’s presence. They may hold hands, put their arms
around each other, or sit close together. In North American culture friends tend to be more reserved and avoid physical
contact.
CC 17.5 Seasons
There are essentially only three seasons in Northern India and Pakistan: Summer (April to June): intense dry heat
Monsoon (July to October): heavy rains, high humidity Winter (November to March): cool during the day, cold at night,
fogs

17.1 Future Constructions
You learned the basic future tense in Lesson 9.
The chart below will remind you how to conjugate
होना in the future (according to the number and gender of the subject):
Masculine |
Feminine |
Masculine |
Feminine |
मैं |
मैं |
हम |
हम |
तू |
तू |
तुम |
तुम |
|
|
आप |

वह |
वह |
वे |

यह |

ये |
ये |
You can change most present tense constructions into
future constructions by replacing the present auxiliary verb (
हूँ, हो, है, हैं )with the
appropriate future form ( हूँगा, होगा, होगी, होंगे, etc.)
For example:
Simple present |
वह यहाँ है |
She is here. |
Simple future |
वह यहाँ |
She will be here. |
Present Progressive |
वह आ रहा है |
He is coming. |
Future Progressive |
वह आ रहा |
He will be coming. |
Present Perfect |
तुम आई हो |
You have come. |
Future Perfect |
तुम आई होगी |
You will have come. |
Present |
उसको जाना |
She has to go. |
Future |
उसको जाना |
She will have to go. |
Present |
हमारे पास |
We have money. |
Future |
हमारे पास |
We will have money. |
Present |
क्या आपको |
Do you need the book? |
Future |
क्या आपको |
Will you need the book? |
Note in the last example there is no है in
the present tense version, but you
can still make it future tense by adding होगा (or in this case होगी to
agree with किताब ).
17.2 Presumptive
As in English, future sentences often connote presumption:
you think the statement is likely to be true, but you don’t know for sure. In English we could use the
word “must” in the translation.
Compare:
वह |
She works. |
वह |
She must work (I presume she works but I |
तुम्हारे पास दस रुपये हैं |
You have ten rupees. |
तुम्हारे पास दस रुपये होंगे |
You must have ten rupees. |
मेरी |
My daughter came. |
मेरी |
My daughter must have come. |
तुमने किसी लड़की को देखा है |
You have seen some girl. |
तुमने ज़रूर किसी लड़की को देखा |
You must surely have seen some girl. |
Note that in the ने construction, when the object is blocked by को, use होगा (third
person singular).
The emphatic particle ही can be added after the verbal phrase to increase the conviction
of your presumption. Most often, ही is used in the common phrase: “तो होगा ही”. This expresses the speaker’s belief that something is almost
certainly
true. For Example:
आपके पास मेरा टैलिफ़ोन नम्बर तो |
You must have my telephone |
शीला पार्टी में तो होगी ही । |
Sheila must be at the |
17.3 “Maybe” with Subjunctive
शायद (“maybe”) can be used with any tense:
शायद |
Maybe he is working. |
शायद |
Maybe this will be |
शायद |
Maybe I wasn’t there. |
To express greater uncertainty, शायद can be used with the subjunctive (optative):
शायद |
Maybe I’ll meet you OR: I may meet you |
शायद |
Maybe that girl will come OR: That girl may come |
Any present or past sentence can be “subjunctivized” by using हो or हों in place of
the auxiliary verb. Remember that the subjunctive of होना is
simply हो (singular) or हों
(plural).
शायद |
Maybe they are coming. OR: They may be coming. |
शायद |
Maybe OR: She |
शायद |
Maybe you need food. OR: You may need food. |
शायद |
Maybe he has to go. OR: He may have to go. |
शायद |
Maybe she wants to say OR: She may want to say |
Subjunctive sentences may also be preceded by
other expressions of uncertainty, hope, fear,
desire, etc.
17.4 Seasons and Weather
There are essentially three seasons in
India:
गर्मी |
The hot season (Summer) |
बरसात |
The rainy season |
सर्दी, जाड़ा |
The cold season |
The word गर्मी
(“heat”) can mean both the hot season, and an episode of
hot weather:
बनारस में कितनी गर्मी हो रही |
It was so hot in Banaras. |
बनारस में बहुत गर्मी होती है |
It is (usually) very hot in |
यहाँ |
It is not hot here… |
Weather conditions are described with either
होना or पड़ना.
Likewise, the words सर्दी, जाड़ा, ठंड can be used for cold weather.
In Lesson 19 we will learn how to talk about
rain and snow.
To express feeling hot or cold takes the
dative construction with the verb लगना:
मुझे |
I’m feeling cold. |
उस |
That child felt hot. |
The adjectives गर्म and ठंडा are not normally used for people, but can be used for parts of
the body:
मेरे |
My hands are warm. |
17.5 Compound Verbs
At this point you do not need to know how to use compound
verbs. However you do need to be able to recognize them because native speakers use them all the time.
A compound verb is made up of two verbs.
The first verb appears in root form.
The second verb is conjugated normally.
The primary meaning is carried by the first verb. The second verb adds a shade of meaning to the first
verb.
The first verb can be any verb.
The second verb is usually जाना, देना, लेना, or आना, but you may
encounter others.
For example:
आ जाओ । |
Come (here). |
हम जल्दी सो |
We go to sleep early. |
मैं समझा दूँगा |
I will explain. |
Sometimes both verbs in the compound can be the same:
दे दो । |
Give (me) … |
ले लीजिये |
Please take… |
17.6 Perspiration
“To sweat” requires the dative construction with the verb
आना:
मुझे पसीना आ रहा है ।
17.7 Adjective Doubling
Adjectives are often doubled in Hindi for emphasis:
काली काली आँखें
मीठे मीठे आम
लाल लाल फूल
